When you're choosing topsoil, you'll have a few things to consider. Make sure to account for:
- Project type: Lawns do well with sand and compost, garden beds need nutrient-rich soil and hole filling projects can be completed with basic screened topsoil.
- Soil composition: Great topsoil ideally has a balance of sand, silt, clay and organic matter.
- Screened or unscreened: Screened topsoil is easy to spread and has a consistent texture, making it ideal for lawns, gardens and flower beds. Unscreened topsoil has clumps, rocks and sticks, making it good for filling holes.
- Nutrient content: Soil that will be planted in needs organic material, like compost and aged manure.
- Drainage needs: Heavy, clay-rich soils can retain too much water, and sandy soils may not retain enough moisture or nutrients. Peat moss, compost and other amendments can help you get the right balance for your plants.
- Testing and quality: Always test your soil to check for pH level, nutrient levels and organic matter content. Fill dirt may lack nutrients or have construction debris.
